15 Traffic Tips For Blogs
This is for anyone who is struggling for ideas about traffic generation to their blog, especially everyone who is part of Alex’s community. It’s not an exhaustive list but should give you some ideas…
1. Article marketing
Submit articles to article directories with a link back to your blog for further information on the article subject. This works extremely well if you are offering a free report or a solution to a problem - Ensure the call to action is enticing enough to generate clicks.
2. Forum marketing
Participate in forums. Most forums will allow you have a link in your signature to your blog. Get involved in discussions and offer advice where you can. Remember to be yourself, read the forum rules and do not spam or you will be banned. A great internet marketing forum where Jason and I visit and particpate in is the Warrior Forum
3. Blog commenting
Start commenting on blogs and leave a link to your site. Don’t spam blogs as all this will do is get your comments removed. Add to the value of the post and people will click on your link to learn more about you.
4. Giveaway sites
Create a free report and join giveaway sites and promotions. Make sure the person has to visit your blog and sign up to your list to receive the report. We are about to join a number of giveaways and we will add a list of sites as we join them.
5. Social bookmarking
Social bookmark your blog posts. You can do this for free with Socialmarker or use the mother of all social bookmarking software and the one we recommend Bookmarking demon. Bonus tip – you can use this to bookmark your articles as well to pump up your articles authority and search engine ranking! Warning - bookmarking demon is for serious SEO, using proxies to register multiple accounts so not to leave a footprint and get banned.
6. Ping and RSS feeds.
Ping your articles, blog posts and rss feeds - Pingomatic and Pingoat and Feedage are excellent free resources for submitting feeds and pinging your blog. If you have set up your blog correctly you should automatically ping the search spiders to crawl your site. Here is just a few of our ping list:

http://ping.feedburner.com/
http://ping.snap.com/ping/RPC2
http://ping.syndic8.com/xmlrpc.php

Feedage is an RSS aggregator site and you can store all your RSS feeds here to get additional links to your sites. You can also submit RSS feeds to RSS directories for even more links.
7. PPC
Not for the the beginner and you better make sure you are building a list. Only for advanced marketers. We recommend you complete your due diligence before attempting ppc.
8. Ad swaps
This is for marketers with a list and free report. Find another marketer with a list in the same niche and agree to promote each others free report. You send traffic to their offer and they send traffic to yours. Make sure the offer is on your blog, where they have to opt in to receive your report.
9. Ezine advertising
This is where you pay for an placement on someones ezine. You will want a publication that fits your blog topic and has a good level of interest online. This will allow you to get the most for your money.
Of course, you need to know where to look – you can start here - Directory of Ezines
10. Viral Marketing
Create a report and offer free re-sale rights so that others can sale it or give it away. Provide quality information with links to your blog and you will soon have a swarm of traffic. A site that specialises in viral marketing is Butterfly Reports. Its free to join, you upload a report and people can use it or give it away, you earn money from your links or affiliate links in the report.
11. Squidoo
Create a squidoo lens on topics within your niche. Alex’s students could create a squidoo on listbuilding and place links back to your blog where you give away the free report. Jason and I use this technique along with other free hosted sites to create a network of links to our sites to drive traffic and build backlinks.
12. Hub Pages
Hub pages are similar to submitting an article to an article directory. hub pages have some google love so you can rank pretty well in google. Re-use your articles that you submit to directories. Simply change the title, a bit of the introduction and a few sentences. You can add many other little features aswell.
13. Videos
Everyone loves Youtube! Dont be put off by thinking you cant create a video, there are many people who submit awfull video’s and they still get masses of views. here’s a free and quick way to get a video up and running:
- Windows Movie Maker (installed on PC)
- Import stock photos and movie clips into WMM
- import free music loops
- add titles and text (play about with the tranisitions etc and have some fun)
= upload to youtube = first video
14. Yahoo Answers
Yahoo answers is a great place for driving traffic. People submit questions on a given topic, looking for answers. Your job is to provide an answer and include a link to your blog where they can find more information. We have had great success when we provide a detailed response. Don’t spam yahoo answers by simply supplying your link with little or no content. Another bonus is that sometimes yahoo answers will appear on googles front page for keyword search terms - a double traffic whammy!
15. longer term seo
For long term success in the serps (natural search engine ranking), you must devise a solid linking strategy. This will include:
- directory submissions
- article directories
- RSS directories / aggregators
- Video sites
- Social bookmarking
- Web 2.0 sites (Squidoo, Hub pages, Blogger, Wordpress, tumblr, yahoo 360 etc etc)
- blogs / Forums
- etc etc etc
Like I said, this is not exhaustive, but should give you a few ideas to start driving traffic to your blog, grab the $1000 prize and more importantly build your list
Please feel free to add your blog traffic generation strategies……

Hi JJ and Jason
Thank you for such a wonderful list of opportunities to help direct traffic to my websites.
At the moment I am keen on pinging and leaving comments in forums as well as visiting blogs.
You may be interested to know that another really good forum to visit is DigitalPointForum.com. This particular forum is recommended by Australian SEO expert Marc Lindsay.
I have taken a copy of your list of sites to visit for the purpose of pinging my own sites.
Thanks once again for your valuable information to help us all build traffic.
Coleen
Hey Coleen
When leaving comments on blogs, try and find some ‘do follow’ blogs that also provide you with some link love
Using firefox and the SEO plug in is a quick and easy way to see if a blog has do follow links.
Cheers
JJ
Hi JJ and Jason,
Great list! The only thing I can think of that I don’t see on your list is free classified ads. Just google that term and you’ll get a bunch of choices.
Hope that helps. BTW, I’d love to be included in your blogroll.
Best,
Debbie

Just touching on what you were saying about’dofollow’. I’ve just installed the DoFollow plugin on my blog. I urge everyone else to do the same as this will encourage some ‘Link Love’ and can only be a good thing for traffic. Check the post on my blog fr more info about the ‘nofollow vs dofollow debate’

Hi Guys,
Just found your site so have added you to my blogroll. Great post and loads of information.
I have put a post on my blog about traffic tactics that have worked for me so far. One of the best has been Squidoo. I only have one lens on there at present but it has been a high traffic source.
My youtube video has also had a lot of hits and driving traffic to my ppp. I haven’t used twiter to it’s full potential but the tweetmyblog plugin is very effective (details in my post).
Let me know what’s working for you!
All the best

Tis is truly a great list of traffic sources.
I can only think of a fiew more like Social Networking like Facebook and MySpace. Twitter, Technorati and fav exchanges. What about JV’s? But then again you need a list and something to sell. Banner exchanges, banner networks, blog networking.
You also have a bunch of ofline marketing you can combine.

Great tips…though the more I read the more I realize I still don’t know!
Very informative post !
The key is quality. So ensure that every traffic building technique you try, you make sure that you are providing good quality unique information.
The second step is to make sure you have a tracking device on your webpage. This will identify exactly where your traffic is coming from. You could spend 1 day on 1 traffic building technique and another day on another technique.
After a few days you can then go and look at your statistics and see which technique is driving the most traffic. Then, instead of using the inferior method, you can concentrate on repeating the better method over and over again.
it is really hard to build massive traffic on a website. you need to promote your website by blog commenting or PPC advertising~-,
